MUSCLE THERAPIST & PODIATRIST

ANDREW AHERN

B.H.Sc (Podiatry), SLM Bodywork, Diploma Remedial Massage & Physiokey Practitioner

Andrew has always had a special interest in the human body and the way it moves, with his initial background being in human movements and podiatry. He completed his degree in 2004 from QUT in Brisbane and furthered his practice methods into muscle therapy once realising the importance of alignment in the body. The main approach he uses is called SLM bodywork, a unique form of muscle therapy combining acupressure and manual techniques that work primarily on the soft tissue to facilitate postural alignment and remove compensations from the body.

A treatment requires the identification and lengthening of dysfunctional muscles which have created imbalance in the body. This postural imbalance can cause certain areas of the body to be subjected to more load and increased wear and tear, which over time will eventually result in injury. Each treatment works on the entire body to stimulate nerve and fascia lines, encourage blood and lymph flow and release sustained pressure in a precise sequence to realign the body. The result of this full body approach allows load to be evenly distributed throughout the body, rather than certain areas having to absorb more shock than necessary. Simply concentrating on the initial area of pain will only provide temporary results as the underlying cause of injury always stems from another area in the body.

His background in podiatry has allowed him to also identify the importance of the role the feet play in maintaining an aligned posture. Faulty foot mechanics can often contribute to injury and misalignment in upper areas of the body. Likewise, the cause of foot pain can often stem from faulty mechanics in areas above the lower limb. In a lot of cases, orthotics can be a great help to reinforce the benefits of muscle therapy; both modalities complement each other. Orthotics however are only administered by Andrew when necessary as not everyone requires them.

When a person is out of pain and in good alignment, shortened ongoing maintenance treatments are an option at 4 to 6 week intervals to allow the body to function efficiently and feel balanced and energised.

Andrew also utilises modalities such as physiokey (neuromuscular stimulation) and myofascial stretch techniques when required. All methods combine to provide a comprehensive treatment to establish alignment, quality of movement and pain relief. He gets great joy out of seeing his patients continue to achieve an active, pain free lifestyle.
